Welcome to the site dedicated to SSAFA Cardiff’s 5K Race Series.

UPDATE 02.06.2021

At the moment, all race planning is on hold pending announcements from the authorities. Also, if, as part of some hybrid relaxation plan, ‘social distancing’ were to be retained, we would be unable to stage any races.

The next update will follow news of changes to pandemic restrictions.

UPDATE 13.05.2021

The first race of the 2021 Series has been cancelled.

The two remaining races may be held on the dates originally proposed (Wednesdays, 23rd June and 21st July) but these remain subject to confirmation.

A further update is expected by the end of May.

UPDATE 24.11.2020

The following dates have been proposed for the 2021 edition of the SSAFA Cardiff 5K Race Series:

Wednesdays, 19th May, 23rd June and 21st July

Having been tentatively agreed with the authorities, the dates are therefore subject only to pandemic considerations.

UPDATE 31.03.2020: The 2020 Series has now been suspended with the possibility that a single race may take place during the month of August this year. Further news on this will appear here in due course.

The 2020 edition of the race Series is on and this year’s dates have been arranged. The races are held on three Wednesday evenings (one per month) and the Blackweir Tavern on North Road in Cardiff forms our race headquarters.

Race dates are as follows:
Wednesdays, May 20th, June 24th and July 22nd 2020

The 2020 Series features the new course introduced last year, as well as further enhancements to timing and recording facilities.

As always, you can enter on the night, (you’ll find entry forms and pens on the tables) or you can enter online, in advance, including payment.

More about race entry.

Details of the new course are available on the Course Map page.

About the Series

The SSAFA 5k Road Race Series in Cardiff consists of three 5k Road Races each summer and raises money for the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association, Cardiff & The Vale Region. The Series is held under UK & Welsh Athletics rules and is a CAAC Calendar Event.

The series was founded in 1998 by respected Race Director Graham Finlayson BEM after he retired as Colour Sergeant from 2nd (V) Battalion the Royal Regiment of Wales after twenty eight years service.

Graham, who was Assistant Secretary of the UKLF sport board, started the annual event with help from Colonel Roy Welsh MBE and Colonel Neil Jones OBE

Colonel Welsh has sadly since passed away.

Entry form

For the 2019 season, you can enter via the FullonSport website using your FoS account. If you don’t have an account, you can register for one – it’s free – and then enter straightaway.

Why not enter for the Series and get a discount on your entry fees. See the FullonSport portal for details.

There is no surcharge for using FoS entry.

As usual, entry on the night is possible using forms which are made available. (Having a pen handy never hurts.)

Last option: download the entry form here for completion by hand in advance. Just remember to bring it with you on the night!
